Order of the German Eagle 1st Class with Document
Rare original Order of the German Eagle 1st Class with Swords (Verdienstkreuz I. Stufe des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler). The Order of the German Eagle was instituted on 1 May 1937 by Adolf Hitler. It was a diplomatic and honorary award given to prominent foreigners, particularly diplomats, who were considered sympathetic to Nazism. The Cross is based on the Maltese Cross, enameled in white with German Eagles at each corner carrying a swastika. The cross is made of gilded '900' silver. The cross is maker marked with number 'L/50' indicating production by the company of 'Godet & Co.' from Berlin. There is no enamel damage and the details on this medal are simply stunning. It comes together with its original award document as found together, awarded to the Italian submarine commander Kapitän zur See 'Carlo Savio' on 12 February 1942. The neck cross and document were found without ribbon, I've added an original ribbon. Desirable and rare original cross!
