Wehrmacht Vehicle Identification Flag

Description

Wehrmacht vehicle identification flag (Fahrzeug Erkennungsflagge). Probably one of the most recognizable items associated with the Nazi regime (third Reich) is the swastika flag. Utilized by almost all the organization of the Third Reich. This is a special flag with grommets in the corners, used for vehicle identification from the air to avoid being bombed by other German units. The 'Oberkommando des Heeres' (OKH) introduced the swastika field and vehicle identification flags on 8 March 1940. Further regulations of April 1941 discontinued use of the swastika flag and reverted to using the 'Balkenkreuz' flag. During the early to mid-war rapid advances, when Germany still had air superiority, these type of flags were widely used by forward troops. Later in the war as Germany lost air superiority the flags were used less and less frequently. The single-sided multi-piece construction flag is sized approximately 192 x 92 cms. The flag has a red cotton base with a separate, machine stitched white roundel, having a black printed on 'Balkenkreuz' to the center. The flag shows minor traces of usage and some small damages, see photos. Rare original vehicle identification flag in used condition!
