WWII British Torpedo Guidance Gyroscope
World War 2 British Torpedo Guidance Gyroscope. The torpedo gyroscope represents one of the most important developments in weapons guidance technology in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The gyroscope rotated at high speed and controlled a mechanism which made the torpedo follow a straight, predictable path after firing. Separate mechanisms kept the torpedo level and at a constant depth so that it would not pass under its intended target. The gyroscope probably fitted to a Mark XII, XIV or XV Whitehead torpedo and was most likely carried by a Fairey Swordfish, Fairey Albacore or Fairey Barracuda. The MK3 Gyroscope is dated August 1943, there are various markings and numbers, see photos. The total weight of the brass and stainless steel construction gyroscope is approximately 9,5kgs. It comes with a post-war wooden presentation base, the wooden shelf however has been broken due to the heavy weight, this can be repaired easily or a new base can be made for the instrument, that's up to the buyer.
