World War 2 British Schermuly Line Throwing Pistol (Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus). A device developed by William Schermuly (1857 -1929) during the late 19th century, and modified during the early 20th century, being a brass flare pistol, with a steel barrel extension to fire a rocket that would propel a wire over long distance to connect a line from ‘ship to ship’, or ‘ship to shore’. The pistol barrel has an extra handle to steady the gun when firing. The pistol is only marked with a serial number '5004'. This is a functional weapon, exempted by the Dutch law in Article 18, paragraph 1, in d, annex II of the Rwm (Regeling Wapens en Munitie).
