Very unusual SS 'Arbeitsausweis', intended as ID for voluntary workers in the fortification constructions in Krakow in late 1944. With a constantly worsening situation on the eastern front, the 'Oberkommando des Heeres' (German High Command) ordered to change Kraków in a Fortress in September 1944. During the German occupation of Poland Kraków was an important transit point to the eastern front, both for personnel as for equipment and ammunition, Kraków was also the capital of the General Government. The card (21 x 15 cms.) is named to a Polish voluntary worker, the card states that the worker could not be conscripted for any other type of labor. A weekly renewal was required, this card has been renewed 5 times, the card was also daily stamped. This person has been working in the construction of the fortifications from 9 November 1944 to 13 January 1945, the city of Kraków was liberated on 19 January 1945. This card (Ausweis) was issued on behalf of 'Der SS- und Polizeiführer im Distrikt Krakau': 'SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Polizei Theobald Thier', Thier was appointed Commander of the 'Festung Krakau' on 12 January 1945. The card bears also a neat makers name that reads: 'ZKW-Druck Krakau VIII.44.2225'. The card is in heavily used and fragile condition. Rare and interesting original piece of history!
