Josef was awarded with the Ostmedal  on 11 January 1944, this document is personally signed by the Commander of the Naval Defense of the Crimea (Kommandant der Seeverteidigung der Krim). Josef was awarded with the Coastal Artillery War Badge on 18 April 1944, this document is personally signed by The Commanding Admiral Black Sea (Der Kommandierende Admiral Schwarzes Meer) 'Vizeadmiral Helmuth Brinkmann' who was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
