Rare SS-Polizei 'Feldpost' Grouping consisting of approximately 16 Field Post letters, 4 envelopes and 2 postcards. Written by a SS/Police member named 'Franz Drye', mostly written from Minsk where he was part of the 'Schutzmannschaft Bataillon 47' which was an Byelorussian Auxiliary Police unit, infamous for taking part in Operation Cottbus, an anti-partisan operation during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany. During Operation Cottbus which began on 20 May 1943 in the areas of Begoml, Lepel and Ushachy, a number of Belarusian auxiliary police battalions (including the 47th Byelorussia Battalion from Minsk) took part in the mass murder of unarmed civilians (predominantly Jews), along with the SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger. The officially communicated result of the operation was that about 9,800 people had been killed (6,087 killed in battle and 3,709 executed). In one of the letters he wrote that he couldn't find a Police Officer's eagle for his new tunic and asks his girlfriend to buy him a SS Officer's eagle in Germany instead and ship it to him. One letter has been written from the 'Gendarmeriekaserne' in Magdeburg on 4 May 1943 and two others from Wien (Vienna). The letters from Minsk (Belarus) date between January and June 1944.
