NEW Book: 'Beter 3 jaar Mobilisatie dan 3 minuten vechten'
NEW Book; "Beter 3 jaar Mobilisatie dan 3 minuten vechten" (Better 3 years of mobilization than 3 minutes of fighting) by 'Robert Ellenkamp', 'Jean Kreunen' & 'Bertus de Groot'. 240 pages (Dutch language) and over 400 illustrations about the preparation and battle in May 1940 in the Achterhoek, along the IJssel and on the Grebbeberg.
It highlights a less studied period of the Second World War in the Achterhoek. The preparation for the German invasion, which started in 1938, the destruction of bridges and other objects to slow down the German advance, and the battle along the IJssel at De Hoven and Doesburg. All of this is recorded from diaries, statements, interviews and letters from the soldiers, most of which have never been published before. This also applies to many photos.
Because all these experiences are written together and presented chronologically, you are drawn along as a reader as if you were part of it yourself. From boredom and not taking all duties so seriously during the mobilization period to the tension of the mostly young men due to the German invasion and the deaths of comrades.
Because it is so comprehensive, the book also contains new insights into the course of the battle at Zutphen and Doesburg and who the real heroes were. The soldiers came mainly from the provinces of Utrecht, Overijssel, Drenthe and Amsterdam. The Achterhoekers fought on the Grebbeberg, many of whom were killed. That too has been mapped out, as has the subsequent captivity, the release a month later, and the re-capture in 1943.
