US M1 Combat Helmet. The M-1 helmet was developed as a replacement for the M-1917 helmet that had seen use since WW1. The M-1 helmet was approved for production in June of 1941. Early models had solid loops (fixed bale) for the chin straps but they broke off to often and were replaced with a moveable hinged loop. This is a helmet with the swivel bale loops and front seam stainless steel rim. The helmet is complete with its original chinstrap. The helmet comes with its original liner, the liner is complete with its leather chinstrap. The helmet liner is marked by 'Capac'. The liner is in overall good used and worn condition, a service number has been painted inside the liner. The outside of the inner helmet is showing a painted on golden acorn logo of the US '87th Infantry Division' and a tactical unit marking for a Field Artillery Unit. The 87th Infantry Division, known as the Golden Acorn, arrived in Scotland on 22 October 1944 and landed in France during the first week of December 1944. The division spent 134 days in combat on the Western front during World War II and fought in the Alsace , the Ardennes, the Rhineland and crossed the Mosel river into central Germany towards the Czechoslovakian Border. Some rank stripes have been painted on both the outer and inner helmet as well. Similar helmets have been published in the book 'M-1 Helmet of the World War II GI', typical for these helmets are that the logos are painted on the inner helmet only.
