US M1 'Military Police' Combat Helmet
US M1 Combat Helmet. The M-1 helmet was developed as a replacement for the M-1917 helmet that had seen use since WW1. The M-1 helmet was approved for production in June of 1941. Early models had solid loops (fixed bale) for the chin straps but they broke off to often and were replaced with a moveable hinged loop. This is an early type helmet with the fixed bale loops and front seam stainless steel rim. The helmet shows the stamped heat numbers '717', this indicates production by the 'McCord Radiator and Manufacturing Company' of Detroit. The helmet is complete with its original factory sewn chinstrap. The abbreviation 'M.P' (Military Police) is stencilled on front of the helmet and the helmet is surrounded by a white line. The helmet comes together with its original 'Firestone' marked liner, the abbreviation 'M.P' (Military Police), matching with the outer helmet is stenciled on front of the liner. The liner is complete with its original leather chinstrap, the liner is in overall good used condition, see photos. Original wartime MP helmets are extremely rare, this is one of the few originals. Stunning original Military Police Helmet!
