German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) Officer's Dagger (Dolch für Offiziere) with ivory grip, named to 'Freiherr Heinz von Stein zu Lausnitz'. Heinz was born on 12 September 1889 in Gotha (Thuringia) and was the commander of the U-Boat 27 (Kommandant der UB 27). He died and got a sailor's grave on 29 July 1917 when the UB 27 was sunk by the HMS Halcyon, a Dryad-class torpedo gunboat of the Royal Navy. On 29 July 1917, Halcyon spotted a periscope near the Smiths Knoll buoy east of Yarmouth, and carried out a ramming attack, followed by dropping two depth charges. Halcyon was credited with sinking the submarine, UB-27. The dagger has a molded, white coloured, ivory (elephant) grip, the grip is showing some minor cracks. The dagger comes with its original scabbard with standard etched lightning bolt design. The reverse ricasso is well marked with the etched manufacturer’s logo and script from the firm 'WKC' from Solingen. The blade is in good condition with some minor spots, the blade shows etched desings to both sides of the blade. The name 'Frhr. v. Stein' (Freiherr von Stein) has been engraved to the scabberd, see photos. Stunning and rare original named imperial navy dagger with ivory grip!
