Engraved US Air Medal in Box

Description

US Air Medal in Box. The Air Medal was instituted on 11 May 1942 and was awarded for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. The set is not visible maker marked or dated. The medal comes in its original box, complete with small ribbon bar and pin. The medal is nicely hand engraved to '2dLt John W. Lindsay A.C.' who was a flight member within the USAAF during the war. John Lindsay served as the Co-Pilot on B-24 (42-51964) of the 778th Bomber Squadron, 464th Bomber Group which was based out of Pantanella Airbase in Italy. On 17 October 1944, this plane was on a mission to bomb the heavily defended city of Vienna. Over Vienna, the plane was hit and badly damaged. Two of the crew members were killed in flight; the others parachuted out and all were captured except for one who died on impact. A memorial in Zohor, Slovakia remembers the plane and two crewmembers who died with the plane. Lindsay was taken as a POW (Camp Stalag 7A Moosburg) and remained there for the rest of the war. Interesting original set in very good condition!
