Portrait-Photo of 'August Graf von Werder'
Portrait-Photo of 'Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold August Graf von Werder' (1818-1887) who was a Prussian Infantry General.
He did not spend his entire career in Prussian service; between 1842 and 1846 he was a Russian officer and fought in the Caucasus. Back in Prussia he continued his career as an officer in the General Staff.
In the German War of 1866 he led his troops, the 3rd Division, as a lieutenant general during the Battle of Jičín and in the decisive Battle of Sadová.
In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 Von Werder besieged and captured the French city of Strasbourg. He also captured Dijon and defeated the French in the Battle of the Lisaine. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross and received an endowment of 200,000 talers. Later the German Emperor gave him the title of count (Graf). August von Werder also received the Order Pour le Mérite with oakleaves.
His Pour le Mérite with oakleaves is clearly visible in the potrait-photo. The photo dates around 1870. Interesting original photograph!
