Kriegsmarine Greatcoat to 'Oberleutnant zur See Zander'

Description

Kriegsmarine Frock Rock / Greatcoat (Gehrock/Mantel). This is a heavy quality dark navy-blue woolen construction privately purchased type greatcoat, it has two rows of five gold coloured front closure buttons. The buttons are the typical gold coloured 'Kriegsmarine' marked navy type buttons. The greatcoat is complete with a pair of sew-in type officers shoulder-boards as intended for an 'Oberleutnant'. A nice hand-embroiderd bullion breat-eagle is hand sewn to the coat. The greatcoat is fully lined and complete with tailor label from the company of 'Paul Köster' from Kiel. The greatcoat is having a name-tag in the inner-pocket, the label is named to 'Oberfähnrich z. See Zander' and dated June 1939. Each sleeve has two machine applied gilt rings indicating the rank of an 'Oberleutnant', above the rings are hand applied bullion stars to indicate line service. The name 'Zander' could possible indicate U-Boat commander 'Joachim Zander', this is the only match to the rank and name in the Kriegsmarine I could find. He was the commander of U 311 (VII C) on 2 missions and died on 22 April 1944 upon the loss of his submarine U 311 in the North Atlantic Ocean southwest of Ireland, where it was attacked with deep-sea bombs by the Canadian Frigate HMCS Matane.
