Wehrmacht 'Sumpftarn' Camouflage Smock
Wehrmacht 'Sumpftarn' Camouflage Smock (Tarnhemd). The Wehrmacht camouflage smocks were based on the Waffen-SS camouflage smocks and were officially introduced in late 1942. The first pattern smocks came in the army 'Splittertarn' camouflage pattern, and were without a hood. The second pattern smocks came in the army 'Sumpftarn' (tan/water) camouflage pattern and included an integral hood. This smock is showing the Sumpf 43 pattern camouflage. The smock is having seven pair of stitched eyelets for a drawstring closure, the drawstring is missing. The drawstring around the waistline is unfortunately missing as well. The smock is having two vertical breast openings. two buttons for closure have been period added to each flap, the smock is size 'I' marked and dated 1943 (E.43) on one of the flaps. The smocks were designed to fit over the standard service uniform and are therefore quite large. This one has been partly tailored and made smaller on the back and hood area for a better fit, see photos. The smock is showing clear traces of usage and some small damages, see photos for details. The smock is still showing strong colours. Great for a Wehrmacht sniper (Scharfschützen) display, hard to find desirable original smock in combat worn condition!
This smock originates from the collection of the recently closed Eyewitness Museum and was in display in the diorama in the last picture!
