Cased KVK 1st Class '1' with 'Überkarton'
This is a nice cased example of the 'Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwerter' (War merit cross 1st class with Swords) which comes in its so-called 'Überkarton' (carton box). The 'Kriegsverdienstkreuz' is instituted on 18 October 1939. The basic criteria for award centered about bravery and service (not in connection with combat). The unissued cross is a nice 'Buntmetall' example, complete with a functional pin & catch, it still retains almost all of it's original silver finish, some minimal staining and age patina is present. The cross comes in its original simplified black coloured case having a neat silver-coloured 'KvK'-logo imprinted on the top. The cross is nicely maker marked with number '1' indicating production by the company of 'Deschler & Sohn' in München. The cross and etui are complete with a rarely found original carton box (Überkarton). This set originates from the famous 'Deschler' hoard which was uncovered a few years ago. Desirable set in stunning stonemint condition. This was the best set I've had, this comes out of my personal collection!
