Nieuw Amsterdam in March 1938. The Nieuw Amsterdam was a Dutch passenger ship built in Rotterdam for the Holland-America Line (HAL). When the Netherlands was occupied by Hitler's armies in 1940, the Nieuw Amsterdam was used by the British government as a troop transport ship.
