Scarce original 'Rotfront' Belt and Buckle
Rare original KPD 'Rotfront' (Roter Frontkämpferbund) Belt and Buckle (Koppel und Koppelschloß).
The Communist Party of Germany (Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands, KPD) was a major political party in Germany between 1918 and 1933. Soon after the appointment of Hitler as Chancellor on 30 January 1933, the Reichstag was set on fire and Dutch council communist 'Marinus van der Lubbe' was found near the building. Marinus (Rinus) van der Lubbe was a Dutch council communist convicted of, and executed for, setting fire to the German Reichstag building on 27 February 1933. He was the first Dutch Nazi-victim. His action and his death had in Germany, the Netherlands and internationally enormous consequences: a week later the Nazis won the German elections. Hitler used the fire to increase his power. He persuaded President 'Paul von Hindenburg' to give the police more power by an emergency decree, the Reichstag Fire Decree (Reichstagsbrandverordnung). The police arrested Communists and other enemies or suspected enemies of the Nazis, the KPD was efficiently suppressed by the Nazis. Even before the first session of the Reichstag the 81 seats of the KPD were canceled. Thousands of communists were imprisoned in concentration camps.
2-piece brass construction early type box buckle, the frontplate is separately attached. The front plate is showing the raise fist, or clenched fist, this was the symbol used by the 'Rot Front' (Roter Frontkämpferbund) which was in practice a paramilitary organization under the leadership of the Communist Party of Germany. After the takeover of the political power in Germany by the Nazis in 1933, former RFB-members were among the first arrested and incarcerated in the concentration camps. The Nazis were seeking revenge on their former rivals and many of the Red Front-Fighters lost their lives in the Nazi prisons. The buckle is not visible maker marked. The buckle comes together with it's original 90cms long leather belt as found together. The leather belt is an early WW1 period type belt. This set was not part of a collection before and was recently found in a house-cleaning in Germany. This is one of the rarest buckles in existence and original examples are hardly ever offered for sale. This is in fact the first original example I've encountered. Extremely scarce original matching set in good used condition, rare piece of history!
